National Chairman of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, at the weekend berated
politicians flooding to APC, saying such moves are not good for Nigeria's
democracy.
He said that the high spate of
defection to his party by politicians especially those formerly with the People’s
Democratic Party (PDP) was worrisome.
Many political big wigs have
switched the APC since the party's
presidential flag bearer, Muhammadu Buhari won the 28th March presidential
election in the country even when the PDP raised alarm over the practice and
called them moles.
The move is expected to worsen
with the overwhelming performance of APC in the governorship election across
the country.
Political pundits fear that the
situation might lead to a one-arty state, which might not augur well for a
plural society like Nigeria.
Oyegun, who voted in his Ward 2,
Unit 1 Polling Unit, Oredo East, Benin City, advised that the politicians
rather than looking for where the land seemed to be greener, could come
together and form a new opposition. . According to him, a formidable opposition
is what the country's democracy needed.
“Many opposition party members
have defected to APC just because they lost out, that is not good for political
development,” Oyegun said. “One would have advised that opposition members
should stay where they are, and form a formidable opposition party.”
Commenting on the election in
Edo, he said the exercise was most peaceful and most decent ever conducted in
the state. Edo state is only electing
members of the State House of Assembly as Governor Adams Oshiomhole is yet to
end his second term in office.
